Where Does CBD Come From?
The initials CBD are shorthand for cannabidiol. This is a chemical compound that is part of the cannabis plant.
The other important chemical in this plant is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.
Both these compounds come from the cannabis plant.
Can CBD Get You High?
CBD does not get you high. It has no psychoactive effect because it contains no THC. If you purchase a CBD product, it probably came from a plant that is 65% or more CBD. The rest of the plant contains other non-psychoactive cannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophyll and vitamin E.
There’s no reason to fear using CBD. Studies have found there’s no THC detectable in the brains of people who use it, and taking CBD won’t make you fail a drug test.

Is CBD the Same as Hemp?
Hemp and cannabis come from the cannabis plant. The cannabis plant has three species:
- Cannabis ruderalis: This is the closest you can get to a wild or natural cannabis plant. It is native to mountainous areas of East Asia and Eastern Europe. It is low in THC but high in CBD.
- Cannabis indica: This cannabis species is native to India. It has high levels of THC, and most growers use it to make hash.
- Cannabis sativa: This is the most commonly grown cannabis species. It can have varying levels of THC. Hemp is cannabis sativa without any THC.
Hemp without TCH sometimes goes by the name “industrial hemp” or “commercial hemp.” These indicators mean it has low levels of THC. In most states, hemp must legally have less than 0.3% of THC. The cannabis that gets you high typically has a THC percentage of 5% to 20%.

At one time, the US was the world’s largest producer of hemp. We made hemp for the world, and hemp was responsible for the prosperity of many farmers in Kentucky, Virginia and other states. Hemp was a premium crop prized for its ability to make fiber, paper, rope and cloth.
After drug prohibition began, the hemp farms shut down. In recent years, the legalization of cannabis with THC has coincided with a rise in commercial hemp production. Hemp producers now make hemp-based oils, beauty products, skin care products, food, rope, clothing and even building materials. Hemp is returning to its former glory as a cash crop.
How Do Companies Get CBD from the Plant?
